Mark

Mark
1) In origin, a Danish unit of account, of 8 ore, introduced into England after the *Viking settlements. The Danish ora was reckoned at 16 English pence, giving a mark of 10s 8d. But the ora of 20d, making a mark of 13s 4d (i.e. two-thirds of a pound) was more common. Many payments were assessed in divisions of this unit, e.g. 6s 8d, 3s 4d, etc. There was also a gold mark = 6 English pounds (8 ore of 15s each). Neither the mark nor the ora was a coin; both were units of account. -
Cf. Angel2; Noble
2) A boundary or frontier. [< OldEngl. mearc, mere = margin, border] -
3) A "banner or "standard; also, a target.
